The New Jersey State Municipal Prosecutors Association (NJSMPA) was organized in 2004 for the purpose of providing a collective voice for the municipal prosecutors of New Jersey. Since our founding, we have also provided our membership with professional development opportunities, and a sense of camaraderie amongst municipal prosecutors.
For too long, the state Supreme Court and the office of the Attorney General issued rules and regulations affecting municipal prosecutors without any input from municipal prosecutors. We're pleased to say that has now changed. The state Supreme Court has traditionally been advised on municipal court matters by its appointed Municipal Court Practice Committee. Until 2006, only judges and defense attorneys served as committee members, but now NJSMPA has a permanent seat with the group. Additionally, our organization is in regular communication with the AG's office, and we are frequenlty represented at meetings of the 21 assistant county prosecutors who serve as supervisors of municipal prosecutors in the counties of the state. The NJSMPA has also testified before the state legislature in Trenton on bills affecting municipal court proctice. In sum, our voices are finally being heard where they ought to be heard.
In the area of professional development, the NJSMPA offers continuing education courses, including an annual convention in Atlantic City, and a program enabling members to become "Certified Municipal Prosecutors" through work experience and completion of continuing education coursework.
A Message from the President
New Jersey State Municipal
Prosecutors' Association
A great deal has been accomplished in our first few years, but there are still plenty of unresolved issues on our agenda, with new items being added all the time. If you are a municipal prosecutor, we hope you will be as active as you can with the NJSMPA, and we urge you to provide feedback on our organization's activities and efforts to promote justice in New Jersey's municipal courts.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Jon-Henry Barr, Esq.
President
